Journal Entry 10/1

Some hardscape came loose so I glued stones to the bottom in order to weigh them down. I’m very frustrated with the setup of the tank and want to restart but I feel like it’s too late in the process to do that. I also crushed up some Indian almond leaves so we can bring down PH and KH to something suitable for life.

Journal Entry 9/28

I performed a water test on the overgrown tank today. GH, KH, and PH, are all high and need to be lowered before fauna is implemented in the tank. To counter this we will use Indian Almond leaves which are acidic and will lower the PH and KH levels.

We are continuing to monitor the tank as we wait for new plant growth. A Bladder snail has appeared in the tank.

The tank has grown a large amount of biofilm, we spent today’s class cleaning the sides with razors and doing a half water change.

The tank is now crystal clear, but due to the lack of feeders we have an overgrowth of biofilm. Our moss also died, likely due to it not being a truly aquatic moss species.

First day in WISRD!

The rest of our materials arrived so we began to put the tank together, first by rising all of our substrate in order to wash off any dust or dirt (which was plentiful). We began layering with Aquasoil, followed by volcanic rock as a filter layer, and finished with black sand in order to compact all the other layers. After this we put in all of our hardscape and planted all of our plants. Then we finished off by filling it with water and setting up grow lights.

Journal Entry 9/3:

My partner and I filled our empty tank with water in order to ensure they stay alive until the last of our substrate arrives, we hope to begin setting up this tank tomorrow. As well as beginning to model what our hardscape would look like by glueing moss to our spiderwood.

Journal Entry 8/31:

Me and Aiden began some work on our shrimp tank for Katherine’s classroom, we began to prep the hardscape by boiling spiderwood in order to leach out the tannins.
