Daphne L.

When I was in elementary school, I really liked the elephant toothpaste project. I thought that the explosion was cool.

I hope to study stress, bacteria, and other neurosciences.

I want to know how different activities affect stress.

August 22, 2025

I am new to WIZRD this year, but I started brainstorming. I began thinking about stress testing and comparing it to brainwave patterns. I think a cool project would be relating different activities to stress levels.

August 25, 2025

I studied how EEGs work, the different waves, and how each point is applied.

I started looking at the pupil-labs eye tracking glasses. I am starting to think of how to use these to study attention span. A possible essential question that I am thinking about is: Does television help us stay on task? How much work gets done in relation to how much the television is distracting.

I am looking at how to transfer the recordings and what information those recordings tell us. I am having trouble keeping the eye tracker focused on my pupil, which could be a result of my black mascara being confused for my pupil.

I realized I hadn’t been saving a lot of my journal entries. Recap: I wanted to grow different plants, but realized the plants I wanted to grow were too big. I tested my hair, not washing it after 2 days, 3 days, and 4 days, to see if the idea that you shouldn’t wash your hair more than twice a week. I haven’t done more research since putting my swabs in the incubator. I swabbed the stick on my scalp and then twisted that sample onto the tray. I then placed this in my incubator and left it for about two weeks. Because this hair project isn’t long-term, I had a conversation with Tim that inspired I to a project I may be interested in. During COVID, all people under the age of 18 missed out on important developmental years regarding social skills, recognizing faces, etc. My research question is: How did the pandemic negatively affect different age groups? What are strategies to help these kids catch up to where their social-emotional skills could be?

October 28, 2025

The last few weeks, I have been focusing on creating a procedure for Dark Matter Day. Dark Matter Day went very well from Brian and my station. We organized the crowd very well. In the future, I want to get a pump for the glue, have a table behind where the kids are so they don’t grab things, and a large trash can. Today, I want to continue my research on the long-term effects that the pandemic had on people at certain ages. This relates to psychology, which I am very interested in.

October 29, 2025

I want to add a psychology section to WIRSD. Today, I noticed that WISRD doesn’t have any psych projects, which I want to change. I am going to research some psychological experiments to begin with. Next week, I am going to meet with Jacob and learn how to use the EEG so that I can use it in future psychology projects.

I went over some fixes to the issues in the slime booth during Dark Matter Day. Here is the original procedure:

Set Up:

  1. Plastic wrap the floor and tape it down (it helps maintenance after trust!!) - This step wasn’t needed because we were outside this year

  2. Plastic wrap the table

  3. Cover the table with a tablecloth

  4. Put glue out on the table

  5. Start pouring glue in cups to prep

  6. Fill each cup about a quarter during prep

  7. Keep the spoons behind the table

  8. Grab the biggest beaker we have and fill it with warm water

  9. For every 100mL of warm water, add a spoonful of baking soda (Ex: 1000mL for 10 scoops of baking soda)

  10. Make sure to stir this warm water until it disolves

  11. Place this giant beaker on the table and have 3 designated spoons for the baking soda solution

  12. Put out a bottle of saline solution (only one bottle because the kids WILL start grabbing it themselves)

  13. Put plastic bags out on the table so it's ready

  14. Hide the slime add-ins behind the table so kids don’t grab it

Procedure:

  1. Ask the kid for white glue or clear glue

  2. Hand them cup with glue

  3. Ask what color then YOU add it in for them

  4. Ask if they want an add in they get to pick one

  5. Have them stir the glue, dye, and add in mix

  6. Add in one spoon full of baking soda solution

  7. Have them stir

  8. Add a spoon full of saline solution (about 4 seconds of squeezing and be a bit generous)

  9. Have them stir

  10. If they ask for more activator check their thing and either say to mix with hands or add more saline depending on how sticky it is

  11. Wait until the slime in done sticking to their hands before handing them a plastic bag

  12. If you get the chance, write their name on the bag but it's not that big a deal!

This is the updated procedure:

Materials:

-Plastic wrap

-Plastic tablecloth

-300+ Spoons

-400+ paper cups

-x2 200+ ziplock bags (two containers of ziplocks totaling 400)

-x2 of the food dye box

-x3 gallon clear glue

-x3 gallon white glue

-(pack of 12 but less should work) Shaving cream

-Baking soda

-x2 Warm water in a beaker

-x4 Large pipettes

-x12 saline solution bottles (it would be helpful to find four bottles that make it easier to squeeze)

-Add-ins are optional

-x3 Tables

-Create a sign that has the instructions of how to get slime out of clothes (so parents don’t get too mad)

-tape

-Wetwipes/ paper towels

-Baby oil

Set Up:

-If we are inside, cover part of the floor with plastic wrap

-Put one table behind the station. The purpose of this is to have a clean table and to keep certain things away from the kids

-Place two tables for the station

-Cover the two main tables with plastic wrap

-Over all tables with the plastic tablecloths and tape them down

-Set up a trash can on one side of the main tables and one by the single table

-On the back table, put all the spoons so they are easily accessible, the 8 of the 12 saline bottles, the food dye, and add-ins if we have them

-Make sure everything is open and easily accessible, food dye tops should be off (it will be on the back table so the kids can grab it), the glue has all the tops off, the pumps are screwed on, ALL saline bottles are open and ready to use

-On the main tables, start pouring white and clear glue into cups about a quarter of the way up

-If we have enough setup time, put some of those on the back table

-Fill two beakers with warm water

-For every 100mL of warm water, add a spoonful of baking soda (Ex: 1000mL for 10 scoops of baking soda)

-Put out the baking soda on the two main tables with pipettes in each beaker

-Put out the wet wipes and paper towels on the back table, this is so that the kids don’t get them dirty

Procedure:

  1. Ask the kid for white glue or clear glue

  2. Hand them a cup with glue

  3. Ask if they want color, then say the colors we have

  4. Ask what color, then YOU add it in for them

  5. Ask if they want an add-in, in they get to pick one (shaving cream, baby oil, foam balls, etc.)

  6. Have them stir the glue, dye, and add-in

  7. Add one pipette full of baking soda solution

  8. Have them stir

  9. Add the saline solution by squeezing the bottle for 4-5 seconds

  10. Have them stir

  11. If they ask for more activator, check their slime and either say to mix with hands or add more saline, depending on how sticky it is

  12. Wait until the slime is done sticking to their hands before handing them a plastic bag

November 4, 2025

Today, I am working on building up a section of psychology for WISRD. I am first answering some key questions about what psychology is so that I can get a better idea when coming up with an essential question or lab.

November 11, 2025

Today I am meeting with Jacob to learn how to use the EMOTIV headset. I was thinking about how I could test what one’s diet is in relation to their cognitive function and productivity.

I am working hard on my poster. I am going to go look at all the EMOTIV materials and write it down. After Thanksgiving, I hope to start my electroencephalogram (EEG) testing on Megan using my fear tactics. I really hope to use more test subjects, but it is difficult because no one wants the gel in their hair.
